What a contactor does

Your thermostat sends a small 24 V signal to the coil. The coil pulls the contacts closed, and power flows to the compressor and fan.

Signs it is worn

Burnt or pitted contacts, a loud buzz, or an outdoor unit that will not start (or will not stop) while the thermostat calls for cooling.

Safety first

A contactor carries 240 V. Turn off the breaker and the outdoor disconnect, then test for power before you touch it. Read the guide.
